Removing Algae from Plastic Pots

Postby crjsci1 » Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:32 pm

Hi,

When growing orchids in S/H in translucent or semi-translucent plastic pots, it is common that
significant amounts of algae grow on the inside of pot restricting a view of the roots (and reducing
light getting to the roots).

While I usually use a bleach solution (with multiple rinses) to remove algae from plastic pots when repotting.

I am wondering if there is a safe algaecide that can be used to remove/reduce the algae in the pot in which
the orchid is happily growing?

Thanks,

Chris

Once the algae has grown, if it not a good idea to try to kill it in-place, as you then have a bunch of necrotic tissue in the pot.

From my perspective, you have two choices: repot and clean the old one (I just stick 'em in the dishwasher), or do periodic preventive treatments to avoid it altogether.

Hi Ray,

What do you use for your periodic preventive treatments (and how often)?

Thanks,

Chris

Zero-tol, Physan, or bleach , every four to six weeks.

Hi Ray,

Final question (at least today :)

I assume you use Zero-tol and Physan at their normal suggested strengths, but what dilution do you use for bleach?

Thanks again,

Chris

I used bleach at one ounce per gallon, but rinsed thoroughly 30 minutes after treatment.

Physan was 1 tsp/gal;, Zero-tol as it comes out of the nozzle.

When using Physan, should I run the Physan/water through the pot as I do when watering and do I need to rinse the pot after thirty minutes as with the bleach water. Thanks.
