Fungus gnat elimination at its best!
Fungus gnats can be an aesthetic nuisance, but they can spread diesases, as well. There are many so-called “control methods” out there – yellow sticky traps, carnivorous plants, even insecticide sprays (which only kill adults, for the most part) – but if eradication is your goal, one of the safest and best ways is through the use of the biological control, Bacillus thuringiensis v. israelensis. The bacteria infect their larvae, killing them before they can mature and reproduce, and in sufficient concentration, exude toxins that kill them immediately.
For years, growers had to rely on commercial products consisting of floating “bits” or “dunks” that contained dormant bacterial spores. Those had to be soaked in water for several days before there was a sufficient active bacterial loading to reach effectiveness.
Microbe-Lift BMC, made by the same folks who produce Quantum-Total, is a much more convenient and effective product. It contains spores, active bacteria, and – unlike the “bits” and “dunks” – their toxic exudates. It is easily dispersed in water, so has an immediate impact, usually making it effective within 24 hours. All natural & non-toxic, it can be applied to areas used by or in contact with humans, animals, horses, livestock, pets, birds or wildlife.
The usual aplication rate is 1/2- to 1 teaspoon/gallon, but that can be doubled or even tripled for extreme infestations. Three, weekly applications seems to be an effective regimen for full eradication.
